tourist stop Mentone, Alabama. Shared by three states and near Birmingham,
Alabama, Atlanta, Georgia and Chattanooga, Tennessee, the Golden Triangle
apexes here, on Lookout Mountain.

Little River Canyon National Preserve, Rocktown, and Desoto and Cloudland
Canyon State Parks, to name just a few. Our moderate climate makes

Chef
Herb Ballenger and his Mom have been wowing locals for years. Reservations
are a must. Expect the requisite steaks and salads but be dazzled
by the surprising array of adventuresome offerings. The pizzas are
really nice too and be sure to save room for Mrs. Ballenger's delicious
homemade deserts. I mean it, at least split one! Out in the country,
20 minutes to Mountain Grove, this is a good choice on your way in
from Atlanta or Rome. Open Thursdays through Saturdays 5:00-8:30pm
From
Cloudland, at the blinking light, turn right. Go down the Mountain,
through the four-way stop in Menlo and into Summerville (about 8 miles).
When Hwy. 48 ends, take Hwy. 27 to the right towards Rome. Go over
the crest of Taylor's Ridge and as you come down the other side look
for two gas stations opposite one another, just before you get to
the two gas stations, look left and see a large Knife and fork hanging
on a nondescript one-story building.
Park
in the back and be sure and check out the fresh herbs growing along
the path, you'll see them again on your plate! Open Thursday through
Saturday nights for dinner. You may bring your own bottle.

Bistro

Mark Resing has recently reopened his famed Mentone restaurant in
Summerville, Georgia. The freshest meats are deliciously and distinctively
grilled with tasty glazes. Outstanding mixed seafood grill, amazing
soups - a lovely meal at a reasonable price.
At
the blinking light in Cloudland, turn right. Go down the Mountain,
through the four-way stop in Menlo and into Summerville (about 8 miles).
When Hwy. 48 ends at the BB&T Bank, take Hwy. 27 to the Left.
Go a few blocks till you see the Chattooga County Courthouse, turn
left on Washington Street. Take the second left past the courthouse,
Union Street, The Bistro is on your right.

The Mentone Springs Hotel

The
most elegant mountain dining! The grand hotel, celebrating its 150th
year atop Lookout Mountain, is truly the jewel of Mentone, Alabama.
You'll want to get here early to wander through the common areas and
soak up the sumptuous atmosphere created by the hotel's recent extensive
reclamation. Dining can be enjoyed indoors or outside on the porch.
The porch affords an unparalleled view of the quaint village of Mentone.
Chef Beth is famous for her pecan-encrusted trout, fresh salad dressings
and other tasty treats.
At
the blinking light in Cloudland, go left. Cross the state line and
continue about another 5 miles or so. In downtown Mentone, you'll
see the large white hotel on your right.
Park
in the back for ease of accessibility. Note: Alabama is on Central
time, an hour earlier than Georgia. Mentone is in Dekalb County, Alabama
which is dry.

little eatery tucked in the back of the historic Hitchin' Post. A
few homemade selections per evening, the menu changes daily. Lunch
is equally delicious; an outrageous chicken salad offered daily! Porch
dining available. Limited seating, reservations recommended.

the blinking light in Cloudland, go left. Cross the state line and
continue about another 5 miles or so. In downtown Mentone, you'll
see the Mentone Inn and the Mentone Springs Hotel, turn left at the
blinking light and then immediately left into the parking lot behind
the Hitching Post & Crow's Nest Antiques.
Open
for dinner Friday and Saturday and for lunch Friday through Sunday
with Chef Magnolia Rose. Note: Alabama is on Central time, an hour

"big city" cuisine in the middle of the country! Extensive
menu, great atmosphere, reservations are almost always needed. You
may bring your own bottle. This is a great dinner following an afternoon
at nearby Cloudland Canyon State Park on your way back to Mountain
Grove.
At
the blinking light in Cloudland go straight through. Follow 157 about
18 miles to Hwy. 136. Go left, about 2 miles turn right at the first
intersection, the restaurant on your right.

days a week, for breakfast, lunch and dinner, this is your all around
answer for good simple food at a good price. Standard American fare,
really nice fresh salad bar (under $3), homemade ice cream for desert
and some excellent entrees in between-try the grilled catfish or marinated
